Project Spotlight — Additions
Expanding a historic farmhouse while preserving its original character — a project that required as much careful planning as skilled hands.
When a family in Rio, Wisconsin reached out to Molitor Construction, they had a clear goal: more space. Their farmhouse — a structure with history and character — needed to grow to keep up with a growing family, but they didn't want to lose what made it special in the first place.
Farmhouses present a unique challenge in additions. Older structures often have non-standard framing, settled foundations, and materials that don't match anything you'd find at a modern lumber yard. The key is matching the new work to the old — in appearance, in structural logic, and in the details that give a farmhouse its feeling.
This project involved adding a connected living space off the back of the home, with a mudroom entry, expanded kitchen access, and additional bedroom space above. The footprint was straightforward; the execution required care.
The finished addition reads as though it's always been there. The siding profiles match, the roofline transitions cleanly, and the interior flows naturally from old space into new. The family gained the room they needed without sacrificing the home they loved.
Projects like this are why we do what we do. There's a real satisfaction in solving the puzzle of an older home — figuring out how to add onto something without diminishing it.
